Recommendations ...

If you haven't heard or seen Kirsty hall 's web site, you'll be in for a real treat...fascinating blog and her resources section for all creative people is just fantastic....Such a lovely and genuine person as well. I have been following her for some time now and am constantly finding new or great information!

Katherine Tyrrell from Making a Mark is also one of the most valuable blogs you could possibly find. A delightful person with a wealth of information, articles and resources. The links to her other sites are fantastic too.

Sometimes because I subscribe by RSS posts to my Google reader, I have found that I really miss seeing the actual blogs / web sites so am doing my best to visit as much as possible....although Reader is great for just reading through the posts, it really doesn't have the same 'ambience' as actually visiting the sites!!

Fragments within ~

You know this is what I love about art and creativity. Within each work, there lies a myriad of other possibilities that are waiting to be tenderly brought out or mercilessly pulled apart . . .  Just a matter of perspective isn't it ?

Dreams of The Weaver

I've spoken in earlier posts about my 'obsession' and connection with 'The Weaving'.
Taking the concept again, I wanted to create drawings that reflected my love of this intricate thread weaving with an area of colour, space and simplicity.

And so began a series of nine drawings (of which seven were sold before dumb dumb here took photos). Once again I have used gouache as a preferred medium along with pen and ink. I really enjoyed these and as I look at the work must admit, I want to get going on more of them!! (self indulgent ? maybe!!)

Inspirations

Image courtesy of  'The Concise Gray's Anatomy'  C.H Leonard AM, MD

When I look at anatomy books, I once again marvel at how incredible the human body is. Really it's amazing how complex our systems are and yet they work both in a co-dependant as well as independent state.

I am absolutely fascinated by these intricate and detailed images, and I find them exquisitely beautiful!

I spent months drawing in my journals the various muscles, ligaments, organs and body parts, studying the lines, the inter-weaving and inter-connecting tissue and veins. I admit to becoming obsessed with the pituitary and pineal gland to the point of completing a series of oil on canvas paintings....!!

And so this is what I love about mark making, referencing the representational in an emotive and abstracted manner.

Yes you might say it's an unusual past time looking at 'body parts', but oh how enthralling it is!!

Homage to the Heavens 2

Gotta say .... I loved doing this drawing. There is an element of fragility about it that I like....

The Weaving of the Web 3....

If one could take a photo of the inside of my brain, I sometimes think this is what it would look like....
Hmmm - could be worse I suppose.... and on the other hand, I see the beauty in this drawing. What can at first appear as a black hole or a void in the middle, can also be construed as the way straight through the middle. All depends on your perspective doesn't it?

The Weaving of the Web 2.

The tangled web we weave is a metaphor for how often we attempt to deceive our self. To convince our self of that which we know is not in our best interests. It represents the constraints and the constrictions that we place upon our self in our attempts to conform to what we think is expected of us.

The Weaving of the Web Series ...

Oh my what a surprise ... more of the weaving journey and visual expression!!
The series continues and I have to admit; I have loved doing these. Hours upon hours of intricate lines and mark making, connecting, inter-weaving, layering. I have loved every minute of it.

Some may say it is 'overworked' ( a common failing of mine), however these pen and ink drawings represent my internal thoughts and feelings process more than anything else!!

It has taken a very long time for me to accept the fact that there are two sides to my personality, the one that dislikes restriction & confinement who needs flexibility and freedom in my life. And then the other side which likes and needs structure, organisation and process. 'We' are often at war and in conflict with each other.

And the ongoing search for balance within my self and my life is so hard to achieve at times. Inner peace and harmony often evades me. The truth is, the only time I ever feel in 'that space' is when I am drawing, painting or creating.

Then and only then, does time and place cease to exist, there is only the present, the inner sense of being authentic and true to my self.

And so it is ....

What is Art to me ?

What is Art to me ?

Art is :
  • that which moves the soul
  • is true to our self
  • that which elicits an emotional response, an emotional connection
  • that which transports one from the general consensus reality, to a higher realm
  • it soothes the soul and nourishes the spirit
  • that which brings Joy & Hope & allows for pain and despair
  • it honours all aspects of our unique human-ness
  • it uplifts, inspires, it touches us, strikes a chord within us
  • that which is felt or done with passion, enthusiasm, aliveness & love
  • it is music, it is words, it is art - when it comes from the heart
  • that which allows us to feel and acknowledge all that lies within us - all that we think and feel
  • that which honours us and our personal power and integrity

That is what Art is to me

Art and Authenticity...

To be authentic in a reality which is constantly changing and challenging  really is a form of art!

Art and Authenticity - two passions of mine that have involved a life long journey of searching, discovering, researching, self development, and personal growth.

For me they are inseparable, whilst other aspects in my life have often been a struggle, being authentic in my art and what it represents to me, has always been critically important.

This Blog is devoted to all that is complex and detailed.
And it comes  from the deepest recesses of my mind and heart.
(In that respect, this blog represent my 'authentic self' more than any other)  . . "Our

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful
beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask
ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
